Lincoln Travel Passport EXPO

The 4th and 5th grade Gifted class at Lincoln K-8 held a Travel Passport EXPO on Friday, May 17. This was the final Envision project of the school year! Travel Passport gives each student an imaginary allowance to “travel” anywhere in the world. The challenge, however, was to plan, budget, and document every aspect of the trip.

In order to accomplish this, students conducted research on their travel destination. They made numerous informed decisions regarding concerns such as where, when, and how to travel; where to stay; what to visit; and how to prepare for their absence from home. Each student created a daily itinerary, a travel-expense chart, a computer-generated graph of travel-related facts or statistics, and a fictional travel memoir regarding our travel “experiences.”

Harding sophomore named Female swimmer of the year.

For the 2nd year in a row, Harding sophomore Emily Thirion has been named the Vindicators Female swimmer of the year.

Black History Month

Throughout the month of February, students in the Warren City School District will be celebrating Black History. Students will be learning about civil rights; slavery; and how individuals, especially
children, stood up for what’s right and how unfair laws were changed; and the life and work of Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks and other famous Black Americans. These learning activities will involve reading, creating web sites, displays and other educational experiences.

Some of the public figures who have come to our buildings to talk to the students about Black History are Mayor Franklin, Steve Arnold (WGH football coach), Andre Coleman (BOE member), Bob Faulkner (BOE member), Regina Patterson (BOE member) and many others.

Peanut Butter and Jelly donation

As part of a Black History month project the 1st Grade classes at Lincoln K-8 learned about George Washington Carver. As a followup to what they learned about Carver, the students brought in jars of peanut butter and jelly to be donated to the Warren Family Mission. The 6 classrooms collected over 80 jars!

Harding students learn about robot-assisted surgery

Students from Warren G. Harding and a handful of other area high schools were invited to participate in a classroom session at St. Joe’s at the Mall Dec. 15 with physicians who use the surgical robot to perform minimally invasive procedures in place of more traditional open surgeries. Robot-assisted surgery enables physicians to perform delicate and complex procedures through tiny incisions with greater precision, vision, dexterity and control than either open or laparoscopic procedures allow. This results in less pain and quicker recovery for patients. It also results in fewer and smaller scars, less blood loss, lower risk of infection and fewer complications. It was introduced at St. Joseph Health Center in Warren last April.

Following the classroom session, where students were able to ask physicians about everything from pathways to careers in health care and what would be required of them in medical school to the rapid advancement of technology and the role of robotics in surgery, physicians and representatives from Intuitive Surgical invited them to move to the Eastwood Mall’s center court where the da Vinci surgical system was on display, sit at the surgeon’s console and “operate” using the robot to perform a series of exercises.

Students operating the robot viewed the “surgical field” from the surgeon’s perspective, which offers a superior 3-D view, and used the system to control surgical instruments to complete tasks such as picking up jacks and placing them in a dish, stretching rubber bands around pencil erasers and rearranging other small objects.

As students took turns at the surgeon’s console, their classmates, teachers and the physicians watched their progress on screens that offer everyone in the room a clear view of the surgical field. In the operating room, this enables assisting physicians, nurses and technicians to better anticipate the needs of the surgeon.

After all of the students finished using the robot, shoppers were invited to take a closer look at the da Vinci surgical system, ask questions of the physicians, and try their hand at operating the robot.

WGH Lady Raiders Volley for the Cure

Sunday Community Swimming at Warren G. Harding

Community swimming events are open to the public from January 20th until March 24th.

The swims are designed as family swimming activities, not just a youth drop off swim. A responsible adult MUST be present. The prices for the community swim will be $2.00 for students and $3.00 for adults, not to exceed $6.00 per family.

Swimming lessons for non–swimmers

Community Swimming will be held on Sundays
Lessons/Adult swim 2:00pm – 2:30pm

Scholastic Art Award Winners 2013

Scholastic Art Awards is a competition where students works are entered by their teacher and then judged by grade level and category. Students first compete with other districts in North East Ohio. If they receive a gold key they then move forward. This year 2 Jefferson K-8 students under the instruction of Megan Mussler have competed.

Raionna Talbert a 7th grader won a gold key for her painting titled “All Mixed Up”, and Kimberly Custer an 8th grader won a silver key for her drawing titled “Pasta Puzzle.” Raionna’s work will now compete on the National level in New York City. Honorable mentions go to Lynn Williams, grade 8, Kchina Williams grade 8, Shabria Fisher grade 7 and Jamarion Campbell grade 8. All work will be on display at the Bliss Hall Gallery in Youngstown State University. Students will receive their awards at a ceremony on Saturday January 19th, 2013 in the Ford Theater inside of Bliss Hall.

Willard gets into the Holiday Spirit

The main office at Willard K-8 was overflowing with holiday cheer earlier this week! Stockings that were made and filled by the Willard staff were hung along the walls and counters. These stockings were raffled off to Willard Students.
